Anna Hazare Anti-Corruption Movement

Anna Hazare Anti-Corruption Movement in India (2011)

The anti-corruption from India in 2011 led by Anna Hazare showed prolific examples of how we can use visual components in our favor for support, love, respect, and so on. In the movement, we can see how notably the media and news were regulated to gather public support and focus on the movement against corruption.

The fast concluded on April 9, 2011, when the government of India complied to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill, also known as the Citizen’s Ombudsman Bill which aimed to prevent corruption and protect the whistleblower.

As seen in the picture, how Anna portrayed himself in a Gandhian cap and white kurta which provokes the image of Mahatma Gandhi which depicts the sense of national unity to the mass public. He held the events with the big picture of Gandhi in the background of the stage raising the flag of India. In protest, big board banners, chants, and catchy slogans were photographed which sparked the flame nationwide.

Graphs and data regarding corruption were shown in the news and live coverage of the protest was broadcast on bigger news channels including the footage of mass gatherings which developed the need for urgency within the public.

Constantly repeating the agenda of the protest with real-time footage and providing ground-level insights and various social media posts just planted a seed of urgency in the nationwide public.

The Anna Hazare movement proves the potential of visual elements in political communication. With the proper use of images, charts, graphics, slogans, and videos, it is vividly clear how the movement showcased the motive of anti-corruption and how it made connections with the public. Because of all these factors, the movement reached its goal of passing the legislative bill and made Anna Hazare a prominent figure in Indian politics.
