Demonetization in India
Images play a vital role in news media they can convey the message in an effortless way to the audience and pictures can change the perceptions of the viewers even though they can influence the behavior of the audience. Images can connect to viewers and generate feelings like anger, sympathy, happiness, and Fear.
The image given above is from CNN News which shows an ATM in India that Is rushed by people to change their currency it generates a feeling of tension among the viewers as it is thought that all ATMs may be rushed and it is very difficult to get money. Some of the news channels showed Demonetization as a good way to reduce black money in the country whereas others showed it as a negative approach and just a problem for middle-class families to stand in long waiting queues.
symbols shown in the image can also convey messages to the people which can manipulate the decision making for example more than 50% of news channels in India are acquired by Indian political parties which only have work to praise them for any random work even though it is done by someone else the news channels world credit the party they are working for. it is done by showing the party symbol in many news broadcasts instead of showing the symbol of the Indian flag. One of the cases showcased in 2013 was when the GST bill was introduced by ex-PM Dr. Manmohan Singh after his tenure finished in 2014 PM. Narendra Modi made changes to the GST bill and news channels showed it as Narendra Modi introduced the GST bill to the citizens of INDIA.
The composition and design of images can play a crucial role in the interpretation of messages that are to be conveyed through the image by looking at the visual cues like green color can represent agriculture, white can represent peace even though if media has to show someone's power or authority they can have a low angle camera shot of them or a high angle shot with people following in background can show the favoritism to the audience so framing also plays an important role conveying messages. even if it involves depth to show the importance of a person like putting light on one person in a group of hundreds. The angle from which the picture is to be clicked can also put the the person in main lead as shown in the picture where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seen giving a speech where he alone is standing whereas others are seated and the picture is clicked from such an angle that puts the focus on him.
.
In conclusion, it can be said that images are very crucial in conveying a complex message and some visual cues and techniques can be used to change the perceptions and decisions of the audience even though sometimes it can manipulate the decision-making of people by seeing such news which are not 100% authentic or photoshopped.Picture Credits
